Welcome to South America and welcome to the ancient country of Peru.  An independent republic since 1821, Peru is a fascinating mix of multiple cultures and ethnicities.  Peru’s geographical location is a good place to start when describing the country; situated on the west coast of South America with a coastline stretching 1500 kilometres from Ecuador in the north to Chile in the south.  On it’s eastern inland borders Columbia, Brazil and Bolivia are it’s neighbours.

Further inland Peru is home to part of the world’s longest continental mountain range, the Andes.  This 7000 kilometre range stretches through seven South American countries and hosts the world’s second highest plateau (after Tibet).  Mount Aconcagua is a shade under 7000 metres.

Inland Peru is also home to the Amazon Basin and the tropical environment which flourishes there; the Basin is gigantic, encompassing seven countries and 40% of the continents land mass.  It is the Amazon Basin which waters the Amazon rain forest, the largest in the world.

Peru has a population of around 30 million people from a variety of ethnicities including South Americans plus those of European, Asian and African descent.  This diverse population creates a flourishing cultural scene which is reflected in the artistic output of Peru.  That cultural scene is largely centred in the Peruvian capital of Lima, the fifth largest city in Latin America which houses around a third of the population.

On this website it is Peru’s cultural and artistic qualities that we are interested in; writing about the numerous artists in a huge range of fields is an easy task as there are so many.  We also delve further back into Peru’s history; this ancient civilisation is one of the world’s oldest and predates the Spanish colonisers by many thousands of years – the Norte Chico civilisation is the oldest known complex society in the region.
